Management
Most experts recommend that HCV treatment be monitored by an infectious disease or GI specialist. Many HIV specialists in correctional settings have become local experts on the management of HCV, due to the high coinfection rate in their patients and because of their familiarity with the management of side effects (neutropenia, anemia) related to HCV therapy. One expert believes that "HIV caregivers who are willing to learn about hepatitis C treatment and stay current should be the ones responsible for the day-to-day care" of coinfected patients.45 Patients must be monitored carefully for adherence, side effects, and response to treatment. See Table 2 for suggestions for monitoring HCV treatment.
